Did you know that December is the best month to photograph moose in Grand Teton National Park? This fact often surprises even seasoned visitors to the area who have not explored seasons beyond Spring and Fall. Why is December best? After the fall moose rut takes place in September and October, a large portion of the valley’s bull moose congregate in bachelor groups to playfully spar with one another and stick together during the tough conditions of winter. During this season, it is not uncommon to see as many as 20 or more bull moose in a two square mile area.
December provides the best timing to witness this when the biggest bull moose while they still have their impressive antlers, AND there is a good chance for gorgeous snow on the ground and in the mountains. If you’ve ever dreamed of that image of a moose with a Teton background, this is your chance to get it. The contrast of a these animals in the snowy conditions of the Tetons is nothing short of pure magic.
